The mechanism of action of plant sterols in lipid metabolism is as follows: plant sterols have a similar chemical structure to cholesterol, affecting its re-absorption from the intestine. Cholesterol is normally secreted into the intestine through bile to aid in digestion and is then reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Plant sterols compete with cholesterol in its re-absorption from the intestine resulting in a reduction in its levels even in people following a hypolipidemic diet.
Modern diets are characterized by lower and lower levels of dietary intake of plant sterols, which is why many foods such as margarine are fortified with plant sterols. These fortified foods help increase your daily intake. Despite this fact, it is difficult to achieve the desired intake, while often their increased consumption leads to an accompanying increase in calories.
Lamberts Plant Sterols tablets provide 800mg of phytosterols and can be added to diets without adding to the daily calorie intake. This dose is equal to the dose that has been used in clinical studies on lowering blood cholesterol. Like all Lamberts products it is manufactured in the UK to strict Pharmaceutical GMP standards.
