Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is a vitamin-like lipid component with antioxidant properties that is produced in the liver, dispersed in the mitochondria of cells and is a key component for the transport of cellular bioenergy throughout the body, hence it is also known as Ubiquinone (Ubiquitous = ubiquitous). The highest levels of Q10 in the body are found in the cells of organs with high energy needs such as e.g. heart, liver. It plays a role in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is involved in energy transport within cells. Research has shown that it works as an antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Since ATP is used to perform all the functions of the body and oxidative damage is destructive to cells, it is not surprising that some chronic problems in the body are associated with low levels of CoQ10, while new research shows that long-term intake of some drugs (statins), can reduce its production by the body, resulting in the appearance of chronic fatigue.
